Q. Once safewrap is initiated and when total control is gained, should the subject decide to calm down completely and comply, is there ever any sense in releasing the subject or should safewrap always lead to cuffing and/or the arrival of LEO (to avoid misjudgements and the potential of a new and worse situation)?

A. Good question. There isn’t an “always” answer here. Your response must be guided by applicable law, your organization’s policy, your role and authority, and the tactical reality of the situation. If a subject’s behavior and the circumstances necessitate SafeWrap, some form of follow-up restraint or assistance from law enforcement will often be appropriate. However, becoming calm while under control doesn’t, by itself, establish that the risk has passed. What led to the intervention and the potential for renewed aggression remain relevant. At the same time, initiating SafeWrap doesn’t automatically require handcuffing or other follow up restraints. The need for continued restraint must be reassessed as circumstances change. Whether to maintain control, transition to another authorized restraint, or release the subject depends on the facts of the situation.

Q. Having to render aid in many circumstances, sometimes under less than ideal conditions, the ability to observe the patient in what is essentially a recovery position, during restraint, will save lives. Thank you Rener for your thoughtful research and experimentation. This is a game changer in the Emergency Response and in-situ medical field.
