Lesson 31: Take the Back (Guard)

Lead Instructors:  Rener GracieRyron Gracie
Access:  Public   Status:  Active   Lesson:  $14.00
Use the guard to exhaust your opponent and win the fight. If your opponent is able to get their arm inside your arms from the guard, the best thing to do is swim back inside and establish Stage 1 control. If you can’t swim your arms through and they are able to apply their forearm pressure across your neck, you can redirect their energy and take their back. In order to simplify this technique, we have broken it down into three slices.

Rener Gracie

Gracie University Chief Instructor

Ryron and Rener Gracie are the eldest grandsons of Grand Master Helio Gracie, the creator of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Their father is Rorion Gracie, one of the world’s foremost experts in self-defense. In 1993, Rorion created the Ultimate Fighting Championship to showcase the supremacy of the family’s self-defense system in a realistic “no holds barred” confrontation against all comers. Rorion’s younger brother, Royce, won 3 of the first 4 UFC tournaments proving that the leverage-based techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu provided the most reliable way to defeat a larger, more athletic opponent. Ryron and Rener were born into this family tradition of testing the art against all challengers.

Rorion introduced his sons to the art as soon as they could walk. As children, they watched him teach private classes in their garage in Southern California. But, it wasn’t until they observed their father and uncles – Royce, Rickson, and Royler – easily winning challenge matches that they began to comprehend fully the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Even more important, Ryron and Rener recognized the profound impact the family’s art had on all who studied it. The life changing transformations of Gracie University students motivated the brothers to teach the art. While constantly perfecting their physical techniques, they worked equally hard to master the powerfully effective instruction methods developed by their forbearers. In 2003, Grand Master Helio Gracie awarded Ryron and Rener black belts in recognition of their mastery of his unique techniques and teaching methodologies.

If you are having difficulty using the Clinch strategy, you can take your opponent down by going for their legs.

Lesson 18: Headlock Escape 1

Lesson 23: Guillotine Choke

Finish your opponent without ever going to the ground with this quick, easy and extremely powerful submission

Lesson 24: Shrimp Escape

If your opponent passes your guard and attempts to achieve the side mount, this technique will put them right back where they belong.

Lesson 25: Kimura Armlock

Named after the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu champion Masahiko Kimura, this versatile technique will greatly enhance your potential from the guard.

Lesson 26: Standing Headlock Defense

If you get caught in a headlock while standing, you will need this technique to gain control of your opponent and safely get the fight to the ground.

Lesson 27: Punch Block Series (Stage 5)

To be fully comfortable from the bottom of the fight, you will need to master this final piece of the Punch Block Series.

Lesson 28: Hook Sweep

By establishing a solid base from Stage 4, your opponent will set you up for this simple and reliable sweep.

Lesson 29: Rear Takedown

If you find yourself in the rear clinch, use this technique to take your opponent down as quickly and safely as possible.

Lesson 30: Haymaker Punch Defense

When the attacker throws a very predictable Haymaker Punch, the best strategy is to slip underneath it and establish the rear clinch.

Lesson 31: Take the Back (Guard)

If a much heavier opponent drives their forearm into your throat, use this technique to get oxygen into your lungs and take their back in the process.

Lesson 32: Guillotine Defense

Even an unskilled opponent can use the Guillotine Choke against you. Perfect this technique in case you find your neck in a tight spot.

Lesson 33: Elbow Escape (Side Mount)

Master this technique, and your opponent’s chance of achieving the mount will be greatly reduced.

Lesson 34: Standing Armlock

Use this simple submission as a negotiating tool with any disrespectful adversary you encounter.
