Q. You guys speak with much wisdom. I earned my blue belt at a sport school in my mid thirties. My lips and inside my cheeks were always cut from being mashed against my teeth during sparring even though i wore a mouth piece. I had my eyebrow cut when my instructor attempted a berimbolo roll. I realized in my fourties that level of intensity could not be sustained much longer.

A. Fortunately, we've learned from the experiences of the many who have gone before us.

Q. I earned my “technical” blue belt in 2014. I moved to a remote area and could not train. I have been in San Diego and have training at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in La Jolla California for the past 6 months. Do I need to schedule a test with my instructor to earn a blue belt?
Joedjimenez (4/27/2022 4:40 PM)
A. Please discuss this with your instructor.

Q. I still remember my first judo class at 6 years of age. I spend two hours learning how to fall, then at the end of the class it was randori time, i got tossed around by every kid in the class and because i was breaking falls, here i was thinking that i won the matches… it took a few lessons for me to comprehend what was really happening… even though i always remember that with a smile in my face, i bet it would have been a way more constructive experience for me if my coaches would have taken a different approach.. just a comment..
TribalMan (4/9/2022 3:01 PM)
A. Thanks!

Q. The original Combatives Intro video still mentions a legit blue belt being given out at the end of Combatives. Does that need to be amended?
tm84 (8/3/2020 1:40 AM)
A. Yes. Thank you.

Q. A lot of good points. I've been in martial arts for 30+ years and have seen many schools with little to no beginner class structure.
Shadowfall (7/24/2020 10:25 AM)
A. Structure is critically important.

Q. Thank you for all your efforts. I agree with your philosophy. I am a 42 year old mom of two kids, with a shoulder injury and I have just signed up for the Women Empowered programme. It's never too late to learn these very useful techniques. I am looking towards my Pink Belt...even if it takes me my entire life to earn it :).

Q. I'm a level two in modern U.S Army combatives does that count as a blue belt ?
jerry g (10/13/2019 3:54 AM)
A. No. Although you have learned many moves, there are more included in the Gracie Combatives program.

Q. a blue belt is some one who can defend there self in a real street fight so why was the combative belt was made?
hosseirdanger (3/28/2018 8:55 AM)
A. The Combatives belt is a stepping stone from the purely self defense training and techniques found in the Gracie Combatives program, into the more sportive techniques and applications.

Q. Is Gracie combatives a pre-blue belt system? How would you classify it?
briver (5/29/2017 6:21 AM)
A. Great description!
GracieUniversity8
Q. Great! It would be a great loss if any of the GU students fail to watch these philosophy videos!!
Tam Duff (2/15/2017 3:24 PM)

Q. So with the introduction of Ricksons Global Federation and the change in curriculum, what is the transition from a combatives blue belt to an actual blue belt?
Ax-Sess (8/7/2016 7:26 PM)
A. This video explains the rationale for the change: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keRaWLVOuPQ. Essentially, after demonstrating the essential street survival skills by earning the Gracie Combatives belt, students will continue to learn fundamental grappling skills for use against a more skilled opponent and gain several months of sparring experience to hone the mindset and patience to perform under stress.

Q. Can we get a Ryron Gracie recommended reading list. The philosophy in this video and in other videos on GU is profound. I want to know how he developed the mindset. Not all Gracie's share the mindset.
Preston (9/28/2015 9:04 PM)
A. He is exceptional! It's not just what he reads. It's a combination of his lifestyle, his life experiences, and his encounters and interactions with people all over the world.

Q. Once a student has gone through the combatives and reflex development courses, what is a good indicator for that student know they are ready to test for their blue belt?
DarianMcDuel (9/10/2015 5:51 PM)
A. When you can free flow through a Fight Simulation Drill, without having to think about what techniques to use, you are ready! We look forward to seeing you in action!
