Q. I recently lost a lot of my vision, but I still go to the academy and train and roll. A few weeks ago someone I don't know (a new white belt probably) asked to roll with me. We started rolling and as I do with anyone I don't know, I tried to evaluate what's his level, how much should I be on the defense, is he aggressive? flow oriented? and so on. He seemed to know what he's doing and was in dominant positions and immediately I knew he can't be a beginner. Maybe he came from another academy? Has some previous experience? I pretty much was on the defense for the whole roll. He almost caught me with a triangle but I was like - no way I'm letting this new guy catch me, and I managed to escape it, after a bit of a struggle. At the end of the roll I asked him for his name, since I wanted to know who is this pretty good guy that came to the academy. It was the owner of the academy, the head instructor and a black belt... I think that if I had known from the start he is who he is, I wouldn't have tried to escape the triangle so much and would just escape it. Me thinkning he is just a new white belt made me believe I could escape his triangle and that's what I did! Sometimes not seeing anything can help :)

Q. This reminds me of playing an instrument. some times you have to apply a little heat to get the extra precision/expression. The trick is to use rhythm to increase intensity in a coherent way. Not sure if it would be the same for bjj tho! Early days for me.

Q. I heard the mention of why this wasn’t expressed in the combatives program, but I can’t help but want to use it in my training. I sort of lead the group of partners I train the combatives with. So my question has to do with testing videos or live tests. How much conviction do you look for in a video submission, since a slower, technical execution is easier to see on tape? And is that different from live tests? Essentially, just how much conviction should be used to display the level of understanding required to pass the combatives test with a 100 score?

A. Conviction is everything! As a student progresses and their confidence increases, their conviction is going to increase as well. If you believe in your technique, it will show!

Q. This philosophy sounds like It contradicts the survival mindset, but in reality having conviction to survive or wait for your moment to explode connects very well with both the survival mindset and the universal misunderstanding Ryron speaks about. Thank you guys for sharing your wisdom.

Q. Would it be fair to say that the "conviction" is the same as the old phrase "the person who wants it the most wins" and thus you do your best in timing, energy use, and commitment to the particular defines or attack?
